Naming Ceremonies

Naming Ceremonies

welcome to the world

A warm, joyful way to welcome a child into your family and community — for little ones of any age, anywhere in Scotland.

A joyful welcome, all your own

A Humanist naming ceremony is a warm, non-religious way to celebrate a child and welcome them into your family and your community. Whether you are marking the arrival of a new baby, welcoming an adopted child, or bringing older children together as a family, it is a chance to pause and celebrate this new chapter with the people you love.

There is no religious requirement and nothing you are expected to believe — the day is simply about your child, the hopes you hold for them, and the promises made by those who will help them grow. Together we shape a ceremony that feels completely like you, full of joy, laughter and heart.

A ceremony to treasure

01

Welcoming your child by name

We celebrate your child and the name you have chosen for them, marking their place in your family and the wider world with warmth and delight.

02

Promises from the people who matter

Parents, and the special adults in your child's life — sometimes called guide-parents, guardians or supporting adults — make heartfelt promises to love, guide and support them.

03

Words and moments chosen by you

From readings and poems to symbolic gestures, every part of the ceremony is chosen by you, so the day truly reflects your family and your hopes.

Make it your own

Every family is different, and your ceremony should feel like yours from beginning to end. Here are just some of the ways we can bring your day to life:

  • Including brothers, sisters, grandparents and friends in the ceremony
  • Readings or poems that mean something to you
  • A symbolic gesture, such as planting a tree or a candle moment
  • Personal promises and wishes for the future
  • Held wherever you like, from your garden to a favourite venue
